Paragraph Comprehension practice test
Reading a short passage and answering what it actually says.
Paragraph Comprehension gives you a short passage and asks what it means. The questions test the ordinary skills of careful reading: what the passage states directly, what it implies, what the main idea is, and what a word means in context. The passages are short — a few sentences to a short paragraph — and the answers are always in the text. The skill is not speed-reading; it is reading closely enough to answer exactly what was asked. The bank here covers the concepts most often tested, each passage original prose on a neutral topic and written for this site, with a one-line explanation of the correct answer. This is one of the four subtests that feed the AFQT.

PC-001
Rainwater that falls on a hillside does not all reach the stream at once. Some soaks into the soil, some is taken up by plants, and some evaporates back into the air. The rest runs over the surface and into the stream. Because of this, a stream's level can rise slowly even after heavy rain, and it can stay high for days after the rain stops.
The concepts this bank tests
These are the concepts behind the questions. The study sheet groups your missed items by concept, so three misses that are all one gap read as one gap.
- main idea
- explicit detail
- inference
- vocabulary in context
- author's purpose
