Line scores, and the job you actually want

The AFQT decides whether you can enlist. Composites decide what you can do once you have. They are different arithmetic on different subtests.

Two different questions, two different scores

The ASVAB answers two questions with one sitting, and most confusion about it comes from treating them as one.

Can you enlist? Answered by the AFQT, which is built from four subtests — Arithmetic Reasoning, Mathematics Knowledge, Word Knowledge, Paragraph Comprehension. How that floor works is its own subject.

What can you do once you are in? Answered by composites — commonly called line scores — which are combinations of subtests built to predict aptitude for a family of jobs. These use all ten subtests, including the six the AFQT ignores entirely.

So the six technical subtests that cannot help you qualify are the six that largely determine what you get to do. People who study only the AFQT four sometimes enlist comfortably and then find the job list they are offered is much shorter than they expected.

How a composite is built

A composite is an arithmetic combination of subtest results — typically several added together, sometimes with a subtest counted twice, and it varies by branch.

The shape is easiest to see by category. A mechanical composite draws on Mechanical Comprehension, Auto and Shop, and General Science. An electronics composite draws on Electronics Information, General Science, Arithmetic Reasoning and Mathematics Knowledge. A clerical or administrative composite draws on the verbal subtests and Mathematics Knowledge. A general or technical composite mixes verbal and reasoning.

Two properties matter more than the exact recipes.

Every branch builds its own. They do not share names, they do not share formulas, and they do not share qualifying lines. A composite chart for one branch tells you very little about another, which is why a job-requirement list found online is only useful if it is for the branch you are actually joining.

Subtests are reused across composites. Arithmetic Reasoning and General Science in particular feed several. That reuse is what makes some subtests disproportionately valuable to your options overall.

Which subtests to protect

If you do not yet know which job you want — which is most people sitting the test — the strategy that keeps the most doors open is not "revise everything equally". It is to protect the subtests that appear in the most places.

Arithmetic Reasoning is the highest-leverage subtest on the whole test. It is in the AFQT, so it affects whether you get in, and it feeds multiple technical composites, so it affects what you can do. If you have limited time, this is where it goes.

General Science is the most reused of the six non-AFQT subtests, appearing across mechanical, electronics and health-adjacent composites. It is also unusually cheap to improve, because it rewards broad familiarity rather than deep method.

Mathematics Knowledge sits in the AFQT and in technical composites, and it is the other subtest where practice reliably shows up.

The narrow ones — Auto, Shop, Assembling Objects — are worth time only if you are targeting a job whose composite uses them. Assembling Objects in particular is used by very few composites, and it is the subtest people most often over-prepare.

If you already know the job you want

Then the sequence is short and worth doing in this order.

Ask a recruiter from that branch which composite the job uses and what it currently requires. Not a forum thread, and not a chart from another branch. Requirements move with need, and the person who can tell you today's line is the person who processes it.

Then work backwards from the composite to its subtests, and spend your preparation there. This is the one situation where uneven revision is clearly correct: if the composite does not use Word Knowledge beyond the AFQT, extra vocabulary work is not buying you the job.

And confirm the non-ASVAB requirements at the same time. Many jobs gate on things the test does not measure — security clearance eligibility, medical standards, vision, citizenship. A qualifying composite with a disqualifying clearance requirement is a wasted plan.

What this site can and cannot give you

This site does not compute composites and does not publish qualifying lines. Both are branch-specific, both change, and both belong to the branch rather than to a practice site. Printing a number here that is a year out of date would be worse than printing nothing.

  1. The composites are described as shapes, not as formulas

    The post says which subtests a mechanical or electronics composite tends to draw on and never writes an equation. Composite formulas are real, specific, and differ by branch, and this site's rule is that a fact about the actual test comes from an official source or is not stated.

    So the shapes are there because they support the point being made — that the six technical subtests carry your options — and the recipes are not, because getting one subtly wrong would mislead someone revising against it.

  2. "Protect the reused subtests" is reasoning from structure

    If a subtest feeds several composites, then losing it closes more doors than losing one that feeds a single composite. That follows from how composites are assembled and it needs no outcome data, which is why the post is willing to say it.

    What it cannot tell you is how much it matters for the specific job you want. That depends on one branch's requirements for one role, and it is exactly the kind of moving, branch-specific figure this site does not publish.

  3. Nothing here says what you would qualify for

    The post explains what composites are and which subtests feed them, and then stops short of the question everyone actually arrives with. That stop is deliberate rather than an omission: a qualification claim built on a practice result would be inventing a real outcome from a made-up input, and it is the failure mode this whole site is arranged to avoid.
